Argentina Stars Taunt England With Falklands Chant After Controversial World Cup Win Over Egypt
Lionel Messi and Co came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in injury time -prompting claims from Egypt‘s players and officials that the game was rigged.
But Argentina certainly didn’t lose any sleep over the manner of victory and their official social media account posted them celebrating in the changing room.
The video was posted with English subtitles and the majority of the lyrics refer to getting revenge for the 1994 World Cup.
They say they were robbed 32 years ago in the USA when Diego Maradona was banned from playing in the tournament after failing a drug test.
But they also reference the Malvinas, which is the Argentine word for the Falklands.
Argentina and the UK fought over the Falkland Islands for just over two months back in 1982.
The countries fought over the island’s territorial dependency with the Argentines surrendering after a 10-week battle. Over 900 people died during the conflict with thousands more captured and wounded.
It’s an interesting jab from the Argies with the World Cup brackets potentially leading them to a semi-final showdown with England.
The two nations have not met since a legendary friendly in 2005 where a Michael Owen brace and a Wayne Rooney effort secured a 3-2 win.
David Beckham scored the penalty to defeat Argentina the last time England met them in a World Cup back in 2002.
The last time Argentina won? That would be back in 1998 when they knocked England out thanks in part to a David Beckham red card.
The Three Lions must get past the Brazil-slaying Norway on Saturday first if they want to book their place in the last four.
Argentina’s lucky escape against Egypt has given them a quarter-final tie with Switzerland, who defeated Colombia on penalties.
